Maytag also received carbon black for coloring the rubber.
The box cars used before piggy back were 40 ft cars. All but a few were RI
markings and all assigned to Maytag Newton. Wish I could remember the
numbers but been too long. Do remember that most of them were 4 digit's
and I'm think something like 7500 to 7900.
Out at Maytag Plant two they had two loading tracks. Cars would be spotted
so doors lined up with each other. They would lay a ramp between the cars
and fork lifts would load the car on the South track first. Was before days
of air bags, so they used plywood for bracing to keep loads from shifting.
Plywood of course had about a dozen or more round holes cut about 3 inches
in diameter to make it worthless for anyone to steal.
Had circus style piggy back ramps on both sides of the main line. North
side of main were 3 tracks with 5th wheels headed East. South side had two
tracks with 5th wheels headed West. Some of the ramps were old flatcars
with trucks taken out from under one end.
