[RITSlist] Commuter car question.

Paul -

Johnson's "Century of Chicago Streetcars" book has a shot with an RI train (with 400 or 401) in the background. First car is an arch-roof combo. Only half the car is visible, so you can't tell for sure, but the windows look just like an Al Capone car's windows. Now it MIGHT be an ex-mainline Harriman... but is sure looks similar to a commuter coach!

The RI got 9 cars from the CNW in 1961.
The RI never had combine versions of commuter coaches
(either their own or CNW); they used ex-mainline
  service combines or baggage cars.
They CNW's were identifiable in that the roof ends
were squared off instead of turtle-back like the
RI's. I remember riding in them, and they were
different as they had baggage racks.
  The RI #'s were 2615-2623, exCNW 5061, 5083, 5090,
  5095, 5096, 5100, 5102, 5104 and 5109.
7 were sold to the NdeM (via Edwards International),
along with some original RI cars, in 1965 and
according to "official" NdeM records I have, were
numbered into the NdeM 4014(12?)-4036 range.
However, I shot pictures of a couple of ex-original
RI commuter cars in Mexico *not* in this number
range, and also shot other cars in this # range that
  were definitely NOT ex-RI, e.g., ex-PRR P70's. So
the NdeM records are incorrect (not unlikely in
Mexico), or some later got renumbered for some
  unknown reason. Hope this helps.
