[RITSlist] Assigned yard job restored at Manly Iowa for first time in almost 30 years

It occurs to me that so much of the fascination with railroading has to do
with the constant sense of loss, as all the traditions of railroading
disappear.  I grew up with my Dad sharing his pics of NYC steam and Monon
passenger trains in Indianapolis; L&N Alcos; N&W steam; Pennsy center-cab
Baldwins.  And listening to O Winston Link steam albums.  I have the
faintest memory of riding the Texas Chief just after the start of Amtrak,
and stronger memories of visiting RI's Armourdale yard, and the El Reno
division offices as a kid, not knowing I was watching the end there.  As
young adult I got to photograph the last pure Santa Fe red and silver in New
Mexico, the last operations of the SP on Tennesee Pass in Colorado, the
final remnants of the Katy, and of the MoPac.  How odd it seems to be
reading about the rebirth of such a railroad operation happening in a small
town in Iowa.  What a strange world we live in.  How great it is.

Not sure when the last Rock Island assigned yard job worked at Manly, Iowa,
but on December 1, 2007, IANR assigned the first of several yard jobs at
Manly, Iowa at the former Rock Island Yard. The new 6 day job will handle
classification of traffic to and from UP and IC&E, industry switching at
Manly Terminal, local elevator, and several new industries planned for
Manly.
Expect growth to require 24 hour per day, seven day per week switch service
at Manly within two years.
Assigned engineer is son of Rock Island Engineer Red Knudson, Marty Knudson,
Conductor is Warren 
McAllister, son of Rock Island Company Doctor Dr. William McAllister.
