Well, this is a blast from the past and a nice surprise! How are you and the
family? Where are you these days? Last time I remember is that you were in
New Orleans.

As for me I've been living in Minneapolis since November 2000, relocating
here from Portland, Ore., where I lived 1997-2000.

Hi John. Long time since I've talked to you.

It doesn't sound like a switching tariff - which you are right would only
list RI served industries open to other carriers via reciprocal switching.
It sounds more like an investor's special book that would be distributed on
a special train trip for stock analysts, a potential industry considering
locating on-RI, a potential merger, etc.

I have one of those books for the Investor's Special in the 1950's.

It could also be a book specially printed for the COO's business car and
kept on board in case he needs to refer to it.

It might also be a throwback to the days of the "bridge carrier" when
railroads prided themselves on not serving too much industry because of the
extra cost in service, but still needed to show shippers that they could
reach anybody near their lines. The non-footnoted shippers would be of
interest to display the economic strength of the Communities the RI reached.
Could also have been a customer handout. Interesting there are no dates.

Those are my best guesses.

                                                                         Tom

Subject: [RITSlist] RI Industry Directory Question

Hi,

I purchased a reprint of a RI Industry Directory from Rails Unlimited of
Elgin, Ill. From what I can tell it's from the early 1940s. The Directory is
organized by industry, then state, town and business name. After some
business names there's an "(a)"; others a "(b)"; with the rest having no
notation. The notes say "(a) Side track connected to our line. (b) Side
track from a connecting line". Let me provide an example using a fictitional
(since I'm doing this from memory) town:

Under the Manufacturing heading for the under Anywhere, Ill., it might say:

Alpha Manufacturing Co.
Foxtrot Co. (b)
Zebra Manufacturing Co. (a)

I would understand this to mean:

(a) Zebra is directly served by RI in Anywhere
(b) Foxtrot served by another railroad in town that connects to the RI in
Anywhere

Correct?

What about all the businesses without an (a) or a (b), like Alpha? Are these
simply other companies in town that would truck their products to a team
track or freight house?

Thanks for your help in advance.

John Galich
