Greetings,
Thank you to all those that responded to my survey regarding the
future of The Rocket. RITS is indeed a very diverse group. My
question about a favorite era prompted multiple responses that
included every year of operation of the Rock Island. In fact no one
survey response was the same. It's that diversity that's going to
make The Rocket an even better magazine.
From the survey one improvement we're going to make is to attempt to
get each issue a bit more balanced. That is to try and include
multiple stories that cover a wide range of subjects. For example a
single issue may include a locomotive story, a look at the history
and operation of a specific location or train, and a report on the
preservation of Rock Island equipment at a museum. Again, this is
just an example and should be taken as a blueprint for the next issue
or issues.
I wanted to take a moment to clarify a couple of other subjects.
First, as Phil Weibler pointed out I am indeed no longer affiliated
with Remember the Rock. I'm very proud of the time I spent there and
I wish the entire Remember the Rock team the best of luck and to keep
putting out a quality magazine. If you are someone I talked to about
submitting material to Remember the Rock in the past few years please
be sure to honor that commitment and forward your material to them.
I've been following the discussion on the relationship of The Rocket,
The Digest, and the Rock Newsletter. Let me say right up front that
my job as editor of The Rocket has nothing to do with the Digest or
the Newsletter. I am not aware of any specific plans of RITS to
discontinue (or continue for that matter) any of these publications.
What I can tell you is that The Rocket should not be looked upon as a
magazine that's not interested in technical or historical stories of
the same caliber that have appeared in The Digest. Nor will The
Rocket only cover post-1930s. The Rocket will cover all aspects of
the Rock Island and reflect the interests of RITS. Furthermore with
each issue I hope you'll be entertained and learn something new about
our favorite road.
Sincerely,
Andrew McBride
Editor
The Rocket
