[RITSlist] Rocket-Digest debate

With great trepidation, I'm going to put in my 2 cents worth.

I was very happy when RITS started the Rocket. I've always felt a quarterly quality magazine was needed. In addition to RITS, I also belong to the CNWHS and the MRHA. I belong to those others because of their quarterly publications and only that reason. I will maintain membership in RITS no matter what happens with the publications, because I am a die-hard RI fan. While I have an interest in those other lines, especially the MILW, if it wasn't for the publications I wouldn't be a member.

I think to grow membership of railfans who have the RI as a second or third interest, something like the Rocket is needed. I have nothing against the Digest and am not saying it should be discontinued. I just think that a publication that comes out once a year, whenever it's ready (NOTE: I have the utmost respect for those who have been involved with all RI publications. I am just as guilty as most members in not writing or submitting articles. I just don't believe I can write very well or have the computer skills needed to help out. So please don't take this as a criticism of anyone involved now or in the past with the publications.) will be a much of a draw to anyone except rabid RI fans such as myself. Even if on time, I think only one large publication a year would be a hard sell to those who have a secondary interest in the RI.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that whatever shakes out, I think we need something quarterly to appeal to others whose main interest isn't the RI. How this is done I'll leave to greater minds than mine.

One other things about dues. Of the three groups I belong to, only RITS in addition to the publications, provides a calender. The two others only provide a discount for members. I'm not advocating anything here, just saying I have no objection to the amount for RI dues I'm paying. I'm proud to be a RITS member and no matter what happens always plan to be a RITS member as long as the group exsists
