I have a pair of unrelated Rock Island questions that perhaps someone can give me some new information.
1. Does anyone have a date when the RI heavyweight commuter cars began to carry the red herald below the windows? My speculation is it began when the the new 2700 cars arrived in the late 40's.
2. I have copies of several pictures that show the the coaling tower in Blue Island. One, which also shows the the GM FT demonstrators and dates the photo to 1939, shows a large wood framed structure that spans several tracks. A later photo, that has RI F2 40 shows a steel framed structure, covering a similar footprint. Does anyone know when and why the wood structure was replaced with steel in those late steam days?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Regards,
Steve Hile
