[RITSlist] Flat Cars

Bob,

Thanks for the info. I have made a rivet making tool by taking a wood
dowel rod, drilling a hole

in one end and gluing a sewing needle in the hole. I take a fine file
and round off the end of the

needle. You can use whatever size dowel rod feels most comfortable in
your hands. You can

use this tool to press rivets into thin plastic sheet.

Joe

Joe:

I have built three of the "streched" flats (one of each style) using the
P2K flat as a starting point, along with Steve Hile's decal sets. I
didn't get carried away on some of the minor changes, like the end
sills, but did scratchbuild the splice plates (the most visible detail)
from Evergreen .010" styreen and added the rivet heads scraped from an
Accurail box I was rebuilding into a welded side car. They came out
well, and the idea for reusing the rivet heads to make the splice plates
came from Ted Culotta's method's that he featured in some of his RMC frt
car stories over the last few years. It IS time consuming to do,
however, and it's tough to get the shaved off rivits perfectly the same
size, so if you need more than two or three flats, Ross's plan for a
"kit" for these cars might work out better. I understand Tichy now sells
pkgs of "rivets" in several sizes, so this could also be used if you
prefer.

Take this for what it might be worth. If Ross does these flats, I'd
probably get several, although I don't need too many.
