One last importer/manufacturer comment:
I was at a Santa Fe Modelers convention in Flagstaff about 20 years ago
(already 20 years ago??!!) and John from Peco River Brass talked about how
the T&P modelers had badgered him for an import of a T&P 2-10-2 I believe.
Well he imported about 300 or so and quickly sold out of about 150.....
It was quite some time before the others were sold. The importers really
can't afford to sit on this stuff for long or they will lose money and not
import any more.
One reason we have so many quality models being brought in is the limited
production runs. The manufacturer/importer can turn their money and have
some profit left over to give another model a try.
The same is true in the RR book publishing business. Except maybe for
Morning Sun the publishers hope to get enough money out of a book in order
to make/print another. Frank Ellington gave a talk about this a number of
years ago at another Santa Fe convention.

$1400 seems reasonable for a high-quality loco of that wheel arrangement
these days. 8^( Obviously, I long for the ³good old days² where a brass
caboose was about $100.00, and a GOOD 2-8-2 was about $500-$700; and those
days weren¹t so long ago.
Brass has almost always been done this way, i.e., based on reservations.
With some locos being limited to less than 100 copies (a Hallmark Texas
Special I once owned was one of only 75), the money adds up quickly if not
enough people sign up. Just a fact of life.
As for plastic going that way, I haven¹t seen any evidence of that at all.
Athearn Genesis, Broadway Limited, Precision Craft, etc., have yet to
mention reservations being necessary. If this changes, It would bode ill,
indeed.

Corrected price on the 2-8-2 (I asked a dealer!):
$ 1400.00
Sorry if I raised any hopes.
The main point of my post was not the price, but the fact that it might not
be made at all if they don't get enough orders - a trend that seems to be
going to plastic models as well as brass !!!
Do you think this trend is good for the hobby ???
Seems like if you don't pre-order, you probably won't get it - what does
that mode do to new hobbyists ???
