Andy;
My favorite era on the Rock would be the early 70's, 1973 - 1974 in
particular, what I like to call the "post profit - pre bankrupt" timeframe.
The Rock Island was still surviving, and doing it's best to continue in
moving traffic from Chicago westward (and visa - versa), although the seeds
of destruction had already been sown.
My favorite loco's were the GP7's, GP9's & GP18's. These unit's at the time
I'm interested in, were the all purpose, universal loco's for the Rock
Island, working a branch line local or yard one day, and working on a road
freight later in the week. Plus the variety of paint scheme's these unit's
wore by the early 70's era was simply amazing to me (it also made it tough
to model sometime's back then as well!).
I would be interested in stories about the operations of the early 70's in
particular, especialy on the Illinois division area (like where were the
local switcher's stationed at, and what buisness did they handle, etc.). I
know a little about some of this, but am sorely lacking in a full
understanding of the actual operation's and why these were done in a certian
manner.
Story's about the road's freight equipment, why it was purchased/rebuilt and
what traffic it was ment to be used for, are also of interest to me.
I hope this will help you out, Andy.
