[RITSlist] A Rocket Survey

Andy,

Welcome to your new job - pleasing everyone by pleasing no one! LOL

My own half a cent on this subject...

I watched the RI disintegrate in the 1970's, and was captivated by the filthy freight and passenger trains bobbing on through Tinley Park. I loved the Red and Yellow colors (Sacrilege to some), even liked the blue and white (Sacrilege to most). The RI was amazing in it's 25 year death throes, a gravely wounded beast clinging to life by any means necessary, even managing to get #57 over the road on time!

Stories about the RI's passenger hauling days help me put a grin on. I am particularly drawn to RI's passenger diesels, from their "Rocket" conception to their freight and commuter hauling demise. I have a particular soft spot for the last three E-7'a and the late, lamented, last E-7B on earth, #610. Heck, I even looked agog at the ex-UP commuter power - painted and HEP'd or not. The RI's GE road power was quite the show too.

The gems of the magazine are the stories (personal and not) from the RI railroaders who made all the insanity that was the RI in the 1970's work. Even the 'office' stories can be highly informative and entertaining. Sadly, there are fewer such stories to be sought out each day as the fraternity known as Rock Island employees shrinks.

The modeling articles I have seen recently have been fantastic of late. The building of the Twin Star Rocket was amazing. There are other RI modelers out there, let's see their stuff...yes, the 'fantasy' power too.

Since I've announced my new position as editor of the Rocket I've
been overwhelmed by e-mails wishing me the best of luck. I appreciate
your support and I think we're going to have an even better magazine
for RITS.

As I mentioned in my previous post this magazine belongs to you and
not me. To that end I'd like to hear what you think. What would you
like to see in the Rocket. What's your favorite era? What's your
favorite locomotive? What kind of stories do you like to read? In
short what do you think the Rocket should be all about?

Though I appreciate all the direct e-mails I've received, I'd like to
see your response posted to the RITS List. That way everybody can
weigh in on the pros and cons to each idea.

I'm all ears.

Sincerely,

Andrew McBride
Editor
The Rocket
