The August issue of TRAINS has "Ethanol: Rail boon or bust?" in a major
10 page article,
featuring Iowa Northern Railway and Dan Sabin.
One of the pages is "Ethanol innovation comes to Manly" which includes an
IANR map.
The article says "The typical 100-million-fallon-per-year ethanol
producer can generate
only about a dozen cars a day of the stuff, so it'd take eight days to
accumulate enough
to fill a 100-car unit train". What if multiple producers could pool
their product and
fill a 100-car unit train every eight hours? That's the innovation that
the Sabin family have
brought to Manly, Iowa as the Manly Terminal. From there they can ship
over UP or
Iowa Northern and can reach CN, CSX, BNSF and NS.
In the NEWS&PHOTOS section is "From the Rock's ashes rises Iowa
Northern".
It says "When TRAINS visited the Iowa Northern Railway in April to
research the article
on ethanol ... we found a hidden gem of a 142.6-mile railroad whose story
hasn't been
widely told." Later, it says "When Sabin's team took over, they slashed
rates 20 percent,
doubled service, leased more grain hoppers, and within 120 days, business
on the line
doubled".
You would have thought they would have mentioned the Hawkeye Express
(sigh).
