If you liked Quastler's book on the Horton Shops you're gonna love this
book...It's more and more of the same good stuff only better.

The Jules Bourquin photos in this book are the sharpest and clearest photos
I've ever seen in any book any place any time. Quastler, for a "non rail"
has done a magnificent job with the captions.

This book tells the story of railroading nearly 100 years ago, from the
ground level, as it was done on the Rock Island in Horton, Kansas....Some of you
guys think that steam railroading was all glamor and fast running. You'll
get the real "nitty gritty" here...and I do mean gritty.
It gives photographic evidence of the old saying that you've heard from me
and a few other railroaders...who have reached "senior status"..that everything
on the railroad in steam days was Hot, and/or heavy and/or dirty.

The closeups of the men at work tell the real story of what it took to
operate and maintain steam locomotives. You get a good look at the dress and
customs of small town folks circa 1910.

There are even a few photos of wrecks and the crude equipment used for
rerailing and picking
up the pieces after the disaster. A few of what we would term "odd ball" or
Rube Goldberg devices escape even the best..so far..sources of what they are
and how they were used. Maybe some of you can add some thoughts.

The photos of the offices and equipment were nearly as fascinating to me as
the actual railroad scenes...Some of this stuff was still being used at the
Rock Island in Chicago when I started in the late 1950's.

Better get yourself a copy of ....In Focus....The first book was quick
sellout and I predict that this one will be a "quicker sellout"

If you don't see the book at your local bookstore you can contact Imre

hours of entertaining reading.
