According to Bill Hayes'  book, Iron Road to Empire, Rock Island entered Memphis on its own track. The Memphis & Little Rock, dated from 1853, became part of the Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf, in the days of the Reid Moore Syndicate, which controlled the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific by 1898.  Other railroads may have accessed Rock Island track to enter Memphis from the west.  Jim Neubauer
