[RITSlist] Reminiscing on the Rock Island

In addition to my summer caps, I have one of the winter caps from the new company. The winter caps are under the "Stormy Kromer" name. A few rails have some of the original and I think they are better than the one I have. The new one seems a bit smaller overall, but especially noticable in the pull down flaps.
http://www.kromercap.com/ home page for the summer caps and other types.
http://www.stormykromer.com/ for the winter line.

I checked the site Andy citted and did not find the winter caps offered. As I wrote, it is my understanding they discontinued that part of their product line and a firm in Upper Michigan sells them. A local hardware store used to get two boxes of Kromer winter caps each year, but do not know if they still do.
Pleased to learn rails still wear them, but it has been years since I last saw a rail in one of the winter caps. The winter caps I have are black, but the local hardware store also had them in dark blue.

Not only retired ones, I (and a few others) still wear them and they are still in business. They did sell off the winter style line. The summer kind are called welder's caps. One time checking into the motel at Clinton a person asked if I was working for ADM there because of my Kromer. He was used to seeing the construction guys wearing that style.
The designer of the original, "Stormy" Kromer was a C&NW engineer who wanted a better cap.
