[RITSlist] Reminiscing on the Rock Island..........and Kromer Caps

It just "shows to go ya" that you never know what direction a particular subject is going to take us.

I'm deeelighted about all the conversation about the Kromer Cap. which I mentioned as somewhat of an aside assuming that everybody would know what they were, but no one has yet commented on the picture itself as to is it the 750or 751 and if so where was the picture taken....

I had a Kromer for many years in the tradional railroad style...wore it many below zero nights at Blue Island in the early 1960's.? Most all "officials" had one and you would see them at derailments, washouts and other "outdoor" activities on the railroad.? Most all train and enginemen wore them as well as most section hands.

There is a story in an old RAILROAD magazine about "STormy Kromer" and how he came to devlop the cap and its popularity on th railroad...If I can find it I'll post the reference here.

I've written a piece or two on THE KROMER for our local railfans club newsletter and it may surface one of these days and appear on this list.

I hope somebody who has seen the photo which caused all this excitment will come up with something about its location.? I'm sure we can document the latest date it can possibly be by it being prior to the time the second prime mover was installed in the 750 and 751.? The dress of the school teacher and the kids says 1940's to me.? Hard to tell about the trainman and engineer.
