Andy asked what can be done to make The Rocket better -- how about more contributors?
My article began when Andy sent a message to the RITS list looking for material for the magazine. Having just photographed the Amtrak detours, I asked if he would like one or two pictures to run in The Rock. He said "yes" and then asked to throw in a little background information, which somehow snowballed into a full-length article. Then thanks to Andy's editing, some gems from Mike Schafer's collection and the production talents of the White River staff, the finished product is what you see in the latest issue.
The point is: if you have never written an article for a magazine before, The Rocket staff has the skills to take your words and pictures and turn them into a professional-quality magazine article. And if the subject that you are interested in writing about is a little more esoteric or scholarly then the usual fare found in a railfan publication, consider The Digest, which is the perfect vehicle for such material.
Have all the stories been told about the Rock Island? In some ways, they have. Every one who was alive when the Rock Island was still an operating railroad knows how the story ends and most of the details up to that point. But I believe there are probably plenty of tales still to be told. And as my article shows, the Rock Island does live on, not only in our memories, but in the lines that still see service today.
So go and write those articles and help RITS continue its goal of documenting the "Mighty Fine Line."
Finally, please do not confuse me with Bill Raia...he doesn't need the aggravation! Bill is a well-established and highly-regarded expert railroad photographer. I am neither. ;-)
