Thanks for the photo essay John!!  While I wasn't at trackside, I did 
something I never thought would be possible at my 60 years.  From a vantage 
point near the home I grew in, I encountered the 844 engaging the some dozen 
grade crossings as it departed south Wichita. I was covered in nostalgia as 
844's whistle boomed through the old neighborhoods. Even dogs howled!  It's 
been 55 years since seeing/hearing a steam train on the Rock Island main in 
south Wichita.  My location was about a mile west of the main line at 
Funston and Water streets.
