I second the "thank you" to Ed and Sharon Batesla for editing the RITS
newsletter these past years. The ROCK is like most rail oriented newsletters -- put
out as a labor of love by editors dedicated to the cause, with limited
material input from members and limitless suggestions/criticism/policy changes after
the fact. Their reasons for resigning are understandable, but it will be a
challenge for RITS to maintain their high publication standards, and it will be
difficult to fill their shoes.

The 2008 calendar is a nice job -- a little grainy on some of the color, but
perhaps that is unavoidable when blowing up the image from a 35mm slide,
especially if a duplicate slide. Basing the calendar pages on the design of the RI
late 1950s calendars was also a nice touch.

The biggest calendar absence noted was on the back inside cover pages, which
are presumably designed to attract more members to RITS. Nowhere on these two
pages does it mention the RITS Digest. What's the deal with not promoting
this part of the RITS publication effort? Its not been that many months ago
that the president and the chair of the publications committee both gave
assurances that the Digest was going to continue. For some people, the Digest might
make the difference between joining/renewing RITS or not. If the Digest is
indeed continuing, then it should be part of the listing of member benefits, even
it it is noted that the Digest is published on an irregular schedule.
