I know in the late 1970s at least the Rock did indeed haul coal off
the Grande east from Denver, but not in unit trains that I know of.
There are a few published photos showing RI trains east of Denver
with substantial blocks of coal hoppers in the train (Olmsted's Rock
Island Rails pp. 85-87), and trains on the Grande with blue ROCK 100T
triple hoppers mixed in with Rio Grande quads (Griffin's Rio Grande
Railroad p.107). I think this was discussed in the past on this list,
and some posters even reported the destination on the RI for the coal.
