In my opinion, the pics looked dark red, rather than maroon.

What I call "Chicago Red" is a shade that showed up early 60s and I think
was used on 403 and 409, I had a code for it in the old system, but it was
definitely lighter red than what we call the maroon, but not a bright a red
as what was used with the slant lettering. Frankly, I have not worked out a
way to describe it compared to the others yet, maybe that will come of this
thread. Incidentally, there are people, including a couple we know, who
worked on this when it was developed, and they have a definite preference
for calling the maroon a "dark red". There was a time when we could compare
them to old Testors' No. 3 and No.4, but that is long gone. :)

The ones that appear to be a dark red, must be the "Chicago Red" as Dave
Engles calls it, and mentioned the fact that two or three he had listed as
"Chicago Red".. The ones that appear to be almost brown, must then the the
weathered maroon.

Folks-

There were no red FP7A's. They were all maroon with striping or yellow
winged noses at the end of their careers with the RI. As far as I can tell,
there never were any red units with anything other than "speed lettering",
or slanted ROCK ISLAND-type. The last three being used prior to being traded
on new power in the 1975-76 era, the 403, 406, and 409 were basically
maroon.

Jerry,

In viewing these pics, the first one of 420 makes me think it was maroon.
However, the ones for 403 cinfirms that is was red.

The other pics you listed confirms it was red!

Ok guys, it's your choice whether or not to go with Intermountain's release.
