Except that some people say the pink covered hoppers were such to enable them to be seen easier from airplanes being used by company officials to check their locations.

  The answer for the White boxcars has to due with them going to the W&OV. I seem to recall reading that these cars were painted white to diferentiate  the W&OV cars from ROCK cars seeing W&OV was a RI subsidiary. Sort of like the Pink grain cars we see. The grain elevator owners did this with having pink cars. So if this style boxcar was white it was a W&OV car.
