David-I have a slide of the 986 taken at Denver on Ex-RI (now Denver Rock Island) trackage, stored with a variety of rr equipment. This slide is dated July28, 1996. It does have Colorado & Eastern on the cab, and no headlight, windows, etc. I seem to recall it being at Goodland, KS at some point; IIRC it was used there for a while...

Subject: [RITSlist] Trying to locate Ex-GN NW-5
I am a member of the Luce Line Railroad Club in Hutchinson, MN. I am
writing in regards to a project we are working on. Our club is
working with other local organizations to restore our 1887 Great
Northern Ry. depot and eventually turn it into a museum. We would
like to locate and acquire some equipment to display on the site.
One of the more interesting pieces of equipment used on the line was
an NW-5 locomotive. It originally carried the GN number 186, but was
later changed to 986 during the BN merger. The BN eventually sold the
engine, and the farthest we've been able to track it is Denver. There
are a few photos available that show it in Colorado & Eastern colors
in 1990, but the trail goes cold from there. Some articles I've found
suggest that C&E was acquired by the Denver Rock Island.
Does anyone have any knowledge of the wherabouts of this locomotive?
Can you confirm if the C&E was acquired by the DRIR? If so, could you
give me contact information for Tom Mars, or have him contact me? Any
information at all would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!
