Dave and Kent,
I don't really know. My feeling is that the paint scheme was to improve the image of the railroad and it didn't the road do better. No you probably not hear bankruptcy Red. I think it is a good scheme but the RI had so many. I suppose they could have just took the big R and put it on Red and Yellow units, but that would not have improved the image much. The association is just due to the the time the paint scheme came in to being and the bankruptcy followed.

Dave,

I have a question that should be posted on 
RITSlist.  Why do RI fans call the 'RI blue' used towards the end of 
operations 'Bankruptcy Blue?'  The Rock Island first announced the new 
paint scheme on February 12, 1975, and the Rock Island didn't file for 
bankruptcy for just over a month later.  This paint scheme just happened to 
be the standard used at the time.  If it hadn't been put in use, I wonder 
if we'd be hearing all this 'Bankruptcy Red' complaints.
