Rock Island adopted red and yellow, the colors of Material Service Company owned by Col. Henry Crown, who sat on the Rock Island's Board of Directors.  The colors were adopted by the Rock Island as a gesture of appeasement to Crown, who wanted more than anything to get the railroad abandoned to get his money out by scrapping the railroad.  This was not to be, of course.  Joe Howard and Ted Zirbes, Advertising Manager and Special Representative respectively, told me the new The Rock wanted to move the railroad as far away as possible from the Crown red and yellow, so the new Black & Blue and White scheme was developed, along with the named diesel units.  Crown wasn't one of them.
