[RITSlist] RI Red & Yellow; Black & Blue and White

Frankly, I say screw Col. Henry Crown, his memory, and I revile him for the trouble he helped create for the Rock Island. Was he one of those so-called "Kentucky Col's", where you buy the title? But anyway, the MS colors (Red/Yellow) were quite good looking for the Rock Island's motive power, and combined with Phil Wiebler's design work, made for a good "railroad" apperance.

Being a older teenager/model railroader/railfan at the time of the unveiling of the Blue/White "Rock" colors, I hated the "pastel" look as not being proper in appearence for a major rail line. Because of this, I began to simply ignore the "Rock" and take a more major interest in the other midwestern roads, like the Milwakee Rd, IC/ICG/GM&O, and BN. But hindsight is 20/20, and now I don't really hate the "Bankrupt Blue" (although I don't model it either), but recognize it simply as part of the history of the Rock Island.

Take my view for what it may be worth, I suppose. But I know this is generally considered, as was said, a sore subject around the RI faithful....

Henry Crown, who sat on the Rock Island's Board of Directors.  The colors were adopted by the Rock Island as a gesture of appeasement to Crown, who wanted more than anything to get the railroad abandoned to get his money out by scrapping the railroad.  This was not to be, of course.  Joe Howard and Ted Zirbes, Advertising Manager and Special Representative respectively, told me the new The Rock wanted to move the railroad as far away as possible from the Crown red and yellow, so the new Black & Blue and White scheme was developed, along with the named diesel units.  Crown wasn't one of them.
