[RITSlist] Zephyr Rocket

Dave,

AFAIK, the number change always took place at Manly, IA. This was because the Inver Grove-Manly-Des Moines line was designated in the timetable as North-South, but the Manly-Cedar Rapids-Burlington line was designated East-West.

This is probably covering ground you've already been over, but in timetable & train order operations, Westward and Southward trains carried odd numbers and Northward or Eastward carried even numbers. When the Zephyr-Rocket arrived in Manly from Minneapolis, it was Southbound, and so carried an odd number (#19). Leaving town, it would be heading timetable east and so needed a even number, accomplished by adding a zero, making #19 turn into #190.

Going the other way, Westbound #201 dropped the last digit at Manly to become Northbound #20.

As for equipment, others can probably provide better info, but all the photos I've seen indicate one set of equipment would have a CB&Q "motor" (locomotive) and the other would have a RI unit. Cars did not seem to be kept very segregated, you could see Q and RI cars mixed in consist.

Photos I've seen from your era (1966) would indicate a typical consist would be 3-4 head-end cars and 1 or 2 coaches.

Hope others can add more and better info, Harold Krewer

I don't think it was a named train at that time, just numbered. (19-190-8 and 15-201-20) I understand that 8 and 15 were Burlington numbers used south of Burlington, and that 19-190 & 201-20 were Rock Island numbers. I understand the significance of the 3 digit numbers. My question is, where did the change in number take place in late 1966? Did that place change depending on how the Divisions were laid out, in different era's?I also want to verify that my understanding of how the Zephyr Rocket worked is correct. For example, did a CB&Q train with CB&Q locomotives, and CB&Q cars, leaving from St. Louis, run all the way to Minneapolis, arriving in the morning, lay over, and then that evening, run all the way back to St Louis? I assume it was the same for the CRI&P train, using CRI&P locomotives and cars?Hope you can help, thanks,Dave Sommer
