I saw the train for many years, and yes it usually ran with a Q unit and 
an RI unit on the counterpart.  As you indicated, the equipment would 
get mixed and both RI and Q equipment would appear on the same train.    
The equipment did not match in the latter years, and the Cedar Falls, 
Iowa, agent, Jim Bolger, a very colorful man to know, said to me "that 
saw-toothed son of a bitch of a train we run . . "  referring to few of 
the cars matching compared to the trains early years.  I can still hear 
Jim saying it.  I was a pall bearer for him, a fine man with whom I had 
the pleeasure of spending many pleasant hours in the Cedar Falls depot.
