Dave

If you can find it I did an article about the Z-R in Digest # 10. The train number change took place at Manly, Iowa.Th Z-R ran on the Des Moines Div from the Twin Cities to Manly. At Manly the Z-R was on the Illinois Division to Burlington. The Q and the RI shared equipment. for these trainsets. But by 1966 the only thing CB&Q on this train was the engine and the headend cars.Coaches were mainly RI but evry now and again a CB&Q coach would sneak in. So it was common to see CB&Q engines with RI coaches.

I'm want to update the article with some more information I can across after I wrote the article which also includes some train consist info from 1966. Just when that might happen I'm not sure but I do want to update this article. Feel free to contct me if you have any more questions.

I'm in the process of planning a layout based on things in and around Cedar Rapids, Iowa, including the Postville branch, in late 1966.

In 1966 the Zephyr Rocket was still running. I don't think it was a named train at that time, just numbered. (19-190-8 and 15-201-20) I understand that 8 and 15 were Burlington numbers used south of Burlington, and that 19-190 & 201-20 were Rock Island numbers. I understand the significance of the 3 digit numbers. My question is, where did the change in number take place in late 1966? Did that place change depending on how the Divisions were laid out, in different era's?

I also want to verify that my understanding of how the Zephyr Rocket worked is correct. For example, did a CB&Q train with CB&Q locomotives, and CB&Q cars, leaving from St. Louis, run all the way to Minneapolis, arriving in the morning, lay over, and then that evening, run all the way back to St Louis? I assume it was the same for the CRI&P train, using CRI&P locomotives and cars?

Hope you can help, thanks,

Dave Sommer
