[RITSlist] Zephyr Rocket

It is no secret that Q rotated their E-units in and out from intercity to commuter service, because everything was compatible steam-generated car heating capability. It was "normal" for the 3 E-8s coming in on the CZ to go right back out on afternoon commuter trains. There was a definite preference to keep E-8 and E-9 units close to the commuter district because their acceleration capabilities were greater enough than the E-7s to make the practice worthwhile, or so I was told by people close to the scene in the 60s.

Dan, I seem to recall in the sixties that the Q engines assigned were invariably one of their E7 models, do not recall seeing E8 or E9 CB&Q engines on the train? They may have been used, but not that I cans recall seeing. Tnx. lwa

Almost 41 years ago, but as I recall:

The Last run conductors were Ralph Hubler Minneapolis to Cedar Rapids, Max D'Marce (sp) CR-Burlington, I think possibly Don Trout Burlington-CR and Bruce Clausen CR to Mpls. I rode the engine St. Paul to Owatonna with Simpson and Bush, then Manly to CR with George Kibler, who retired upon arrival at CR on 190.

The CB&Q units were always my favorite, although they did not have Rock Island radios, so if they had trouble, there was no way to contact anyone other than the wayside dispatcher's phones or throwing off a message to the few night operators along the line.
