To drive or not is certainly your choice.
The thing about drug dealers is a bit feeble, yet illustrates well the American aversion to public accomodations of any kind. Public accomodations are exactly that, for better or worse.
As a public accommodation, Amtrak cannot discriminate against anyone who duly purchases a ticket and shows a valid ID. Various passenger types can be found riding its trains. Families with children, young folks, old folks, Amish, English, Danish,...heck, they even let lawyers ride.
Like most folks, I drive nearly everywhere. However, I usually have a good experience when I ride any passenger train, even Amtrak.
The Builder is a fine ride. There should still be a morning and afternoon Zephyr though. One train a day from Chicago to the Twin Cities ain't enough...just my opinon (worth every penny you paid for it).

I live in the present. I drive. Do not wish to associate with the drug dealers who use Amtrak.

I beg to differ. You must be living in the past. Most Amtrak trains are booked in advance, or nearly so. The last two trips to Michigan via Chicago I couldn't get a business class seat, and I had take a later train back once because the earlier one was full. And I bought my tickets over the internet in advance. People are fed up with overcrowded, under-construction highways, high gas prices, airline hassles, and all the other problems of our poor transportation system. The future is rail. Dan LaKemper
