[RITSlist] [Rock Island Rockets] Rock Island tailsigns

You may be referring to the short-lived "Arizona Limited"? "The Apache" was
indeed a Chi-LA train, whereas the A-L was an attempt by the RI and SP to
draw tourists to sunny Arizona right after the war, as I recall - it was
seasonal, and only made it a couple of seasons. Stout's book tells the
story on this one.

The Apache ran from Chicago to Globe Arizona. Globe was the home to many
“dude” ranches and resorts. Tourists came to Arizona and stayed at one of
these places in Globe and then were given a ride in an open top touring car
over fish creek hill and then into Phoenix. The canyons off the hill still
have the wrecks of many an old jalopy. Only the first class cars went to
globe. The mail and express cars were switched off at Bowie and went on to
Phoenix. The train actually terminated in Phoenix. This train was replaced
by a McKeen car which met the Imperial at Bowie and passengers transferred.
The McKeen car ran until 1953 and was named the Gila Tomahawk. The next
passenger train over the line was in 2006 consisting of the Jane Marie and
the Vista Canyon pulled by an Arizona Eastern Locomotive. I have photos
..

Scanning thru the list I saw a train name I have never heard associated with
the RI before. Anyone know anything about "the Apache"?

Does anyone have detail information on the stainless steel tailsigns used by
the RI for trains such as the Twin Star? I¹m interested in dimensions,
close-up photos, construction details, etc. Pretty much any help would be
appreciated.

Brian,

Tomar has pictures to look at.
