[RITSlist] [Rock Island Rockets] Rock Island tailsigns

The Apache was always a steam-powered heavyweight train. Not sure which
year, but sometime between 1937 and 1945, Nos. 11 and 12 were renamed from
"The Apache" to the "Southwest Express" and truncated to Chicago-Dalhart
service, with a Chicago-Rock Island parlor car; a Chicago-Dalhart 12-1
sleeper, a Chicago-Herington diner; and a Chicago-Dalhart coach, offering
box lunches between Pratt and Dalhart. This is what I can tell from
comparison of my Dec. '37 timetable, which lists "The Apache" and my May
1945 Official Guide reprint, which lists the "Southwest Express" and the
"Californian" (no "Imperial" yet).

Yes, you are correct. Now, I seem to recall that the A - L was light weight
but painted gray. Was the Apache diesel - light weight or was it steam
powered as was the Californian?
