Notice the stencilling on the cars...The term "set aside" may be unique to the Rock Island..some railroads used "condemned".? I'm not sure that I ever saw "condemned" on a RI car, but the "set asides" were "condemned" to execution at "The Swamp" at Silvis.?? This was an area, now occupied by the John Deere Foundry west of the shop area.



When I first started at the Rock Island (Dember 1959) the swamp which its title accurately described was just that.? The carbodies of "set aside" cars were dragged in there and burned...The odor and mess was all that you could have hoped for.? Imagine what it would be like if you tried it today.



That property was sold to John Deere for the Foundry about 1966 when the Rock Island began real estate sales in a big way.

In Olathe, Kansas, a pole shed constructed over two 40' x 9' wooden rail cars was auctioned Dec 18, 2007 for dismantling. Louis Droge, who rebuilt the Elmont, KS depot, took some pictures of the two former RI boxcars. Steve Hile said they appear to be from 30000 to 32999 series which were built in 1905-06 by ACF. These went to MofW service and?were numbered 95209 and 96742.

Louis wanted to share his photos with everyone and I agreed to build an album on rrpicturearchives.net. I was also able to procure the original pictures that the auctioneer used for the listing. We hope you enjoy the detail such as the diagonals in the walls and so on. Comments are?welcome both here and in the album, especially if you can identify their MofW service.
