All, out of Chicago, the red engines protected the schedules of No. 3 and No. 7, and according to my article in Remember The Rock, Fall 2005 issue, Vol.2,No.3, the engines were painted specially for the Delegates' Train to the 1945 signing of the United Nations Charter, held in San Francisco.
The color red was nearly cerise but was closest to crimson, a bright red with a hint of orange to it. See page 8 and 9 and decide for yourself. There is a picture of the 4033 in the article. It shows a locomotive with a banner on it that reads "This locomotive is one of 10 to be used on the Rock Island's Golden State Limited to California," and shows a boiler much lighter in tone than the black locomotive that it's a part of. Too bad Kodachrome was not around in 1924!.
