[RITSlist] Rock Island 5 Chime Air Horns

"EA7" #642 had some variation of the Nathan Airchime model P-5.

The most common variation on the Rock Island was the P5R24. This is a P-5 with the #2 and #4 bells facing 'backwards' on the manifold.

The P series bells were interchangeable and, as the horns were disassembled and reassembled for maintenance, the bells look like they were put back in several locations on the manifold, but the RI usually kept the orientation of the 1, 3, & 5 bells facing forward and the 2 & 4 bells facing backward.

Now for modeling...there is no current out-of-the-box part for this horn. An M-5 gives you that clustered multiple-bell look yet is still a bit of a stand-in. It's not the same. I also tried to modify an Overland horn that had all 5 bells facing forward (the horn was meant for an NS Model I think). This gives somewhat the look of a P5R24, but the bells appear a bit oversize.

There are two kits available for you to roll your own. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but the killer for me is durability on working models. The plastic one looks cleaner than the brass one (Cal-Scale?), but can't tolerate handling or operations.

There is a brand new casting in the works (Details West?) that just hasn't hit the stores yet. This new horn should have the looks and durability necessary. I will re-equip my fleet when the part is available.

After the new horn is available and you modify the raw E7 shell (considerably) for all those extra vents, the 'open' radiators, the cutaway skirts, (and more, this is a lot of work!)...you'll need a sound decoder featuring the P-5 and double V12 567's and you'll have the look and sound of old 642, one of my personal favorites of the RI E's in the 1970's.

What style 5 chime air horn did Rock Island use. Specifically on E7 642. And who makes the closest approximation of it in HO scale? From my research it looks like a modified Nathan m-5, with the 3 forward chimes, higher on the stand than the 2 read chimes... Thanks, ~Kevin
