 Pete and List:

My Grandfather lost his leg in a coal mine accident in Cable, IL when he was 16 years old.? The owner of the coal mine was Ransom R Cable, who was also President of the RI.? The family story goes that Cable himself became involved with rescuing my grandfather and arranged for a special train to run him to the hospital in Rock Island, IL. Later Cable used his influence to help my Grandfather become Postmaster of Rock Island, IL. My family owes the Cable family - wherever they are - a big thank you for looking after our ancestor back in the 1890's.

Searching the web for info about RIS, I found a website that credited Cable's father (or was it an Uncle?) for coal mining interests in Coal Valley, Cable and other locations.? Cable reportedly got into railroading through a RIS predecessor company that his family constructed to service their coal mines.? As the Cable family became closer to the CRI&P Cable made the jump to class-one carrier management and became a nationally known advocate for the railroad industry.

I have the original RI station shield from Lafayette, IL, one of the last stations on the old RIS line before it was reduced to just serving Milan, IL.? It hangs proudly in my office at the STB in Washington DC.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Tom Brugman

The remains of the Rock Island Southern is now what is known as the MILAN BRANCH running from just west of the depot at Rock Island southeast to Milan (depot is still there) and along ANdalusia Road (HWY 92).?

We rehabed the far end of the line in the mid 70's for the Rock Island industrial park, but I don't think they ever had a rail customer there and the track is back out now, at least into the RI Industrial park.

The line curved south just beyond what is now the end and extended on to Sherrard, Ransom, CAble (put those names together and you get a prize for Rock Island history) and ultimately ended up at Galesburg...It was at one time, maybe to the end electric.

All of the above is subject to correction by someone who really knows something about it.

Pete

Rock Island Southern was a both steam and electric shortline that ran south out of Rock Island, Illinois, intil the late thirties.? No relation to our Rock Island Lines except to interchange traffic.? Jim Neubauer
