Tom, Pete, and All - Before we go tooooo far down the wrong track, the line from Rock Island thru Milan, Coal Valley, Lafayette, Toulon and on down to Peoria was the RIP line - the Rock Island and Peoria Railway.  Wade A. Calvert has a neat little book out "The Rock Island & Peoria Railway - The Peoria Route" which tells the story.  Yes, the Cable family was into mining, banking, and railroad building.  The Rock Island Southern branched off at Milan and headed west, then south then east thru Taylor Ridge, Reynolds, Sherrard, Preemption, and Cable. Their steam locomotives were shopped at Silvis - I have seen a photo that shows the cab of the 215 (a 4-6-0) in the shops.  The modern-day warehouse in Milan that Pete talks about was, IIRC, for Eagle food stores. The track layout was so poorly designed that 60' insulated box cars - the standard for food service - could not make the curves if coupled to another car.  PAW
