Then write a story with photos and send it in so they have a piece of material from you to make they can reduce that material problem.
I have sent a story to the Digest and got a letter with it back with grammatical errors and saying that your subject "is good for a long history of the railroad, but our opinion is our readers would also like to see maps, good photos(sometimes hard to get), and more about the physical details of the line as well as operational material such as schedules and timetables." To cover a good deal of this would take a whole Digest. "Limiting a roughly once-a-year publication to one whole subject is a bit much in a publication that has to satisfy about 100 persons with that magazine as their only moderately-technical source of material on their favorite railroad system includung three or four large predecessor/subsidiaries." Well other historical societies have done it with out a problem keeping interest and selling plenty of them as well. I feel the Digest would be better served as an additional publication with one subject devoted to each issue and then
the people who are interested in that subject or line could purchase what the are interested in. Clearly from the letter I received my opinion in publications Means Squat. So why send one when my story is not interesting enough.
That is all I have to say on the subject.
Period.

P.S. I think RITS is also a quarter behind on our scheduled publications?
How could that be, when all the publication problems were supposedly going to be solved with the expensive Rocket publishing arrangement of the last few years? Now we are being told that the delay is due to a "shortage of material"??? Wasn't that "shortage of material" the same problem that we used to hear about from the editors of the Digest? The same problem which some officers, some of those overseeing publications, and some members were not particularly tolerant??? The only difference is that the Digest was produced by RITS volunteers at very low cost, while the Rocket is produced by a commercial publishing company at a considerably higher cost to RITS, with editorial work presumably also paid out of RITS dues revenue. Weren't we supposed to have everything on a more timely basis when we started paying for what the volunteer editors used to do?
It might also be noted that when the Rock was a stand alone publication, rather than an insert mailed with the Rocket, it also appeared on a much more timely basis. Of course, that was back when RITS dues revenue vs. expenses were sufficient to cover the extra postage for the Rock mailings. Indeed, it does seem like things have deteriorated....
