I successfully joined on the first attempt.
 
What is that "initial "Create Profile" box" intended for?  Perhaps I  can 
help others get through it.
 
Seems like a number of folks are having problems joining, I'm already  there.

single  continuous lower-case string of letters/numbers, beginning with a letter, 
with  no spaces and no oddball characters such as #,% etc.  It wouldn't 
accept  my real name, which (like most names) happens to include upper case letters 
 and spaces. If you happen to correctly blunder into doing it correctly (as I 
 successfully blundered), it will then retroactively tell you all of  this.
